Horses: Animals as Companions.

Their role

For thousands of years horses have played a significant role in human lives. They played a major role in shaping the civilization, first as companions, then as workers, later as main means of transportation, being a part of fighting wars, developing agriculture and trade, and now that the necessity in animal labor is not so demanding, they have transformed into athletes. But that doesn’t cover all points, they are also incredible companions.

Biologically, horses are prey animals, making them constantly aware of their surroundings, always alert and very sensitive to any external stimuli. They easily sense human emotion and, being social animals, heavily rely on company and clear, consistent communication. Previos studies have shown that time around horses can reduce stress levels, lower cortisol and heart rate and altogether improve emotional wellbeing, additionally with the time you spend outdoors it creates an even stronger soothing effect. Subconsciously we associate horses with freedom and power due to movies and beliefs we were exposed to at young age, making bonding with these big beasts an even deeper and more sentimental experience.

Our role

Many horses have not been lucky with previous owners, left in terrible conditions, and getting scared by slightest approaches. It is common for people to visit dog or cat sanctuaries and volunteer to contribute to the slightest, but very significant changes. It is not so common with animals bigger and scarier and I would like to bring attention to that too. Many rescued animals, despite not being aggressive or dangerous are denied any care, by making this knowledge public I would like for it to become a step towards change. Cyprus is a home tp\o many kind people, rescuers that take care of animals in need, like the Animal Rescue Organisation in Cyprus, however that is still not enough to help even most of them. Volunteers can contact and agree to visit, to provide at least some of the necessary care. After all these animals have done for us, making sure their lives don’t involve suffering is the least we can do to pay them back!
